Philip H. Grondin, Sr. With Mrs. Bette Grondin

A Tribute to our Founder – Philip H. Grondin, Sr.

As many of you already know, our friend and the founder of the Sturdivant Island Tuna Tournament passed away in September of 2017. Phil Grondin has been a huge source of  inspiration for all of us. He was indeed our friend and a mentor in so many ways.

When the tournament got its start in 1998, who would have thought we would go on to raise over $800,000 for charitable donations. These were principally scholarship endowments at Maine’s Community Colleges.  This would have never happened without the leadership of Phil. Somehow his excitement, drive and foresight has made the many tasks seem a little easier.  We couldn’t help but feel aligned with the Phil’s goals.

As we listened to his Eulogy we couldn’t help but feel like we were part of a movement. A movement whose purpose was to do the right things for others. While at the same time the importance of “having fun” and enjoying life was never lost.

Phil may have left this earth but the profound level of positive influence and energy he has left behind will go on forever.

Over the years, we’ve heard from dozens of recipients of SITT Scholarships. The theme has been similar to Crystal Smith who says, “When I began the nursing program it became clear to me that I had made the best decision and nursing is what I am meant for. So please know that your generosity will be extremely helpful in completing my degree and taking the next steps in my career. Thank you so much!”

Julie at the Southern Maine Community College Foundation sums it up very well:

“Your scholarship provided much needed financial support to help scholarship recipients pursue their academic goals. The importance of your gift to these students cannot be emphasized enough – quite simply, you are making a real difference in someone’s life.  – Again, thank you for your generosity and commitment to making higher education affordable and accessible for SMCC students.”  Julie – SMCC Foundation.

Any man who can positively impact the lives of so many has our deepest respect.

But, Phil was not just a fisherman, outdoors man, businessman, or kind-hearted visionary. He was truly of family man – and it is for this that he deserves our ultimate respect.

After much conversation and soul-searching, SITT 2018, the Philip H. Grondin, Sr. Memorial – Sturdivant Island Tuna Tournament, will be our last year. Over the past 20 years, we have had the VERY BEST supporters we could hope for. For that we thank You all so very much!

we ask you to please go that extra mile one last time

With the memory of Phil still fresh in our minds we ask you, our many sponsors, donors, auction patrons and friends to please go that extra mile one last time. Know that your contributions will go to Maine Community College student scholarships and a chance for a brighter future for those that deserve and need it most.
